After reading 'Wind from Danyari' I had to read the sequel, 'Journey from Walara', by West Australian author, Laurel Lamperd. The Hennessy boys go to war, Danny to England to be trained as a bomber pilot, and Will joins the Australian Army and is sent to New Guinea. The story begins in the time of innocence in Australia of 1939. The author showed me the lives of people in outback Australia of that time, and how their innocence changed as the war progressed.
Lamperd has the knack of describing the conditions of north west Australia to such an extent that she had my mouth dry from wind blown sand, only to be washed clean in the next chapter by watered down beer in a London pub on a damp wet night, after a bombing raid over Germany. Her description of the Kakoda trail, the mud, the tropical heat and rain, with the expectation of fighting the Japanese brings to life the bestiality of man when at war.
It is not a story of war, but a story of a family caught up in a war. How relationships are made and broken, some deliberate others beyond control of the character. I read the book on a Kindle and after I'd finished, the characters and the locations stuck in my mind for days, even though I was travelling and seeing new places. A well told story.

Journey from Walara The Walara series Book 2 edition by Laurel Lamperd Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Journey from Walara is a multi layered novel, well researched to give an accurate account of the times, with well chosen descriptions to place us inside the story. It's wonderful.
When Danny and Will Hennessy leave the dust and heat of their vast sheep station, Walara, in north-west Western Australia and sign up to serve in the Armed Forces they have no idea what they are letting themselves in for. Their experience in Australia and in foreign lands becomes the reader's experience and we gain many new friends along the way.
The dialogue is lively and powers this character driven story. Every character has its own distinctive voice - from the children as they grow and change, to the men and women whose experience of love and war change them. This second book in the compelling Danyari series, with its joy, humour and tragedy is presented with such loving care from the talented Western Australian author, Laurel Lamperd, who is in tune with her world. From the Western Australian coast to England during the Blitz, from Sydney and its environs to the muddy track of the treacherous Kokoda trail in New Guinea, Journey from Walara is a physical as well as an emotional journey. This action packed novel takes us there and makes us feel.
Laurel Lamperd deftly weaves sensual love with the heartache of loss and shows the horror of war with touching moments and unexpected acts of compassion. I love the Hennessy family. Like friends from afar but often remembered, they remain with me after I close the book and leave Walara. I can't wait until the release of Laurel Lamperd's next book in this series which will transport me back to Walara and this family who has become so dear to me.#
As an ARC reviewer, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It took me back to a time when the early settlers struggled to make a good life in Australia, through the horrors of war and helped me see how the pioneers viewed life.
Laurel Lamperd pulls no punches in this Australian World War II novel. The fates of her young protagonists, so full of illusions about war and heroism, are moving and very realistic. As disillusionment sets in, they strive to hold on to their humanity through love. A slim chance under the circumstances.
