A fine production from my currently-favorite author. There is plenty of humor here (in a "ghost story!"). Really cute people, and not too many characters, so there's little confusion about who's doing what. I actually prefer the wonderful "Joe" to the main character. Joe is tough, but so remarkably kind--and incredibly resilient, putting the best spin on whatever life brings.I gave this only four stars because it is not the author's best book. To begin appreciating this author, I would start with Mikawadizi Storms--an absolute masterpiece, and one that even Dennis Vickers will probably never surpass. Full of fun and serious ethical deliberations, Mikawadizi presents intercultural respect and forgiveness in a concept-and-action-filled literary achievement. Mikawadizi totally lives up to its advertisement in the New York Times.

Dennis Vickers weaves a fascinating tale of a suspenseful murder mystery solved by a nerdy college teacher. In discovering the secret to the ghost haunting the park near his communal residence, William also discovers himself through the power of language. Filled with sexual tension, intriguing characters, and a riveting delivery, Vickers puts you on the edge of your seat. You'll find Only Breath hard to put down.
This book has a refreshingly different feel from the sort of writing that populates the bestseller lists more literary, but not so literary as to leave you wondering what you're reading (like what seems to be in fashion among current literary selections). The narration skitters back and forth across the line from being omnipotent (third person) to almost a character you expect to meet sometime in the book (and occasionally breaks the "fourth wall" and talks to the reader). You can read it for the mystery; you can read it for the literary slice-of-life. I look forward to more of the series.
